Composting consultants come in all shapes and sizes. Some have engineering backgrounds, others in science or academia. Specializations include report writing, studies, conceptual facility design and finished product marketing, among others. I learned composting literally from the ground up, taking windrow temperature readings and throwing lime on leachate and anaerobic substrate at dozens of facilities I helped permit, design, start-up, manage and/or remediate in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois and Missouri.
Composting consultants with my brand of hands-on experience aren’t always necessary, but prove invaluable for facilities requiring practical operational solutions to feedstock and recipe mix formulations, capacity management, odor and contamination issues, monitoring, processing, and testing protocols, training and personnel management, as well as finished product development, sales and marketing. Prior to becoming a consultant and Principal of Hidden Resources, I spent over a decade managing day-to-day operations of dozens facilities in the states mentioned above, as well as fulltime manager of a 26-acre site in Southern California near the Mexico border permitted for 340 tons per day. Composting consultants like me, with this type of direct operational experience, understand the intricacies and challenges of starting-up and managing the dynamic conditions common to small, medium or large-scale composting facilities, and can be an excellent resource for troubleshooting challenges required to maintain a smooth flow of operations, maintain regulatory compliance and make the biology, and business, work.
